"Love seeing small differences make big changes."– Current Support Worker

If you're looking for a role where you can build genuine relationships, support people to live independently and enjoy a variety of activities, this could be the perfect opportunity.

About the role

We're looking for an enthusiastic and caring Support Worker to join our team in Shrewsbury (SY5), supporting two young men in their 20s who live together in a bungalow.

The people we support are autistic and have learning disabilities. One gentleman also has Down syndrome. Both lead active and fulfilling lives and enjoy a balance of social activities and quieter time at home.

This is a rewarding role where building strong relationships and understanding each person's communication style, preferences and routines is key.

One gentleman communicates using limited words and Makaton, so a willingness to learn different communication approaches is important. Both men are independent in many areas of their lives and enjoy being involved in making decisions about their day-to-day activities.

The people we support enjoy:

• Cinema trips

• Days out and sightseeing

• Visiting attractions such as aquariums and wildlife centres

• Friday night discos

• Dancing and attending local dance groups

• Spending time with family and friends

• Exploring new places

• Relaxing at home and enjoying their own space

• Doing the things that matter to them

One gentleman has travelled extensively with his family and enjoys a busy lifestyle, while both men appreciate having time to pursue their own interests independently.

Support includes:

• Supporting people with their personal care

• Meal preparation and supporting healthy routines

• Administering medication

• Supporting communication, including learning and using Makaton

• Supporting people to attend activities, appointments and social events

• Supporting people to maintain their independence

• Building positive relationships with family members

• Supporting people to do the things that matter to them

Family involvement is an important part of life for both gentlemen, with regular visits and ongoing support from parents and relatives.

Shifts

• Day shifts typically between 7:00am – 10:00pm

• Sleep-in shifts: 10:00pm – 7:00am (£50 paid to sleep)

• 1–2 sleep-ins per week

• Alternate weekend working

Shift times can be flexible around planned activities and individual needs, and some days may finish earlier depending on what people have planned.

Rotas are provided in advance to support planning and work–life balance.

About you

You'll be a great fit if you're:

• A confident and positive communicator

• Someone who enjoys building genuine relationships

• Friendly, outgoing and approachable

• Able to recognise when people want social interaction and when they prefer quiet time

• Patient and willing to learn new communication methods, including Makaton

• Someone with a good sense of humour

• Respectful of people's independence and choices

• A strong team player

• Reliable and adaptable

• Passionate about helping people live fulfilling lives

• A driver with a full UK manual driving licence

Experience is not essential. We're looking for people with the right values and attitude, and we'll provide all the training and support you need to succeed.
