Dimensions support worker Bruno had a stroke when he was just 15 years old. Rushed into hospital by his worried family, he was initially misdiagnosed and sent home. By the next day he had lost the use of most of the right hand side of his body.
Bruno spent much of the next 17 years in rehab. Today he walks with a limp and he has regained much of the original function in his hands and arms.
“I lost my job in retail when Covid-19 hit,” recalls Bruno, “and although the idea of support work appealed to me, I had zero experience.
“But I thought I’d apply anyway because I loved the idea of supporting someone to live an ordinary life, when I’ve been supported by others for so much of mine.
“In the interview I talked about my disability with Esther, who is now my manager. She was really positive, pointing out that we’re all different but that when we work as a team we can draw on each other’ strengths to make the biggest difference for people. So sometimes my team help me. And other times, I help them. It works.
“And two years later, here I am. A disabled Brazilian marketing student supporting other people to get more out of life. And loving it!
“What would I say to other disabled people out there? I’d say that Dimensions is a great organisation to work for. It’s big enough to have loads of opportunities and small enough to be truly caring towards its staff. If you have the right attitude, there’s endless opportunities here.”
